ESL Program Mission and Vision


District 197’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program provides academic language support to English learners (ELs) in order to achieve their personal goals and academic potential, and to prepare them to be responsible citizens in an interconnected, multicultural, and multilingual world.


We intend to create...

  • a safe and respectful learning community that values all cultures and languages,
  • a welcoming environment for English learners and their families,
  • an educational community that honors native language and culture,
  • a rigorous English language program based on proven best practices and sound research, and
  • graduates who are culturally literate, able to self-advocate, and are career and college ready.

Outcomes that Matter to All:

  • English learners have access to high quality curriculum and instruction.
  • English learners build skills in English proficiency and language acquisition.
