Among the goals of the District 197 Wellness Committee was to increase the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables, particularly locally sourced produce, available to students across the District.
Thanks to a $21,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Child Nutrition staff has begun taking the initial steps to bring locally sourced fruits, vegetables, dairy, poultry and grains into the school district.
Likewise, the Child Nutrition staff has partnered with Twin Cities Local to build relationships with local farmers and develop procurement procedures.
One of the earliest farms to partner with District 197 was Straight River Farm near Faribault. On September 8, 2014, Straight River Farms delivered nearly 6,000 ears of sweet corn, which was then served to students across the District in a variety of dishes.
