94% of parents rate the quality of the education provided by District 197 as good or excellentAt their July 17 meeting, the school board heard the results of the annual district community survey. For the past several years, West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools (District 197) has contracted with Minneapolis-based research firm The Morris Leatherman Company to conduct a community survey of District 197 residents.

Presenter Peter Leatherman particularly highlighted that 86% of residents rate the quality of education provided by the district as “good” or “excellent.” Of those, 55% responded with excellent, a rating that is among the top ten percent in the suburban Metro.

“It’s outstanding to get over a majority of residents saying that the quality of education is excellent (within a district),” said Leatherman, who noted that, compared to other districts this rating is high.

Some highlights from the 2017 resident survey include:

  • 86% trust the school board to do what is in the best interest of the students.
  • 93% feel they receive a good value for their investment their local public schools.
  • 83% stated that they were satisfied with learning and achievement within the district.
  • 80% said that they were proud of the district and would recommend it.
  • 92% feel that the district provides a safe and secure environment for its students and staff.
A sub-set of those surveyed included parents of District 197 students. Among district parents:

  • 95% trust the school board to do what’s right for students.

In addition to providing the school board and administrators with valuable community feedback, items on the survey are used to inform future district initiatives and monitor progress on current projects.

According to Leatherman, the majority of residents believe the district spends tax money responsibly. Among respondents, 68% agree the district is spending taxpayers’ money effectively and efficiently. Further, 69% of residents rate the financial management of the district as “good” or “excellent.”

The survey also focused on technology, with 80 percent of community members surveyed saying the district is improving teaching and learning through the innovative use of technology in the classroom.

The multi-lingual community survey was conducted in May 2017 through telephone interviews (cell phones and landlines) with 400 randomly selected district households. The survey’s margin of error is +/- 5%.
