Ryan Schmitt PhotoSince his sophomore year of college, Ryan Schmitt, who is a second grade teacher at Mendota Elementary School and a 2010 Henry Sibley graduate, has been on a journey toward achieving overall wellness through weight loss, healthier eating and fitness. In August of 2016, he achieved his goal.

“I started on this journey because I wanted to feel better mentally and physically,” said Schmitt. “Before I started this journey I always felt tired, had up and down moods and was unhappy more than I was happy…I realized I could feel better with a change in diet and exercise.”

By integrating small changes in his day-to-day routine, such as 15 minutes of exercise a day and getting enough sleep, Schmitt started noticing healthy changes in his overall well-being. He had more energy and fewer mood swings. In addition, Schmitt has lost 144 pounds over the past five years while working toward his weight loss goal.

“My advice to others is to start small, establish a routine and do it as a team, said Schmitt. “It is important to set small achievable goals. I made the mistake of setting a goal that was too lofty at first. Set a monthly goal that you want to achieve.”

Schmitt inspires others around him as he sets an example through his healthy lifestyle. He encourages students, staff, parents and athletes to set goals for themselves and support one another.

“I think a healthy community is also a supportive and open community,” said Schmitt. “I let people know that if they want help or ideas they can come to me or I can point them to a person who may have a better answer. It is easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle when others around you are trying to do the same.”

The Healthy Hero Award is a program of the District 197 Wellness Committee.
